The earth is alive! You are looking into the mouth of a growler - a mudpot found in the backcountry, off the Clear Lake Trail in the Canyon area of Yellowstone. The hole was making noises like there was a monster growling under the ground. It was spitting mud - and it had a strong sulphur smell. A truly amazing scene, that pictures can't really capture adequately.
